Hi there, I’m Shayla Michelle Reaves. My journey through life, with all its twists and turns, has truly been the backbone of my creativity. From growing up as an adopted child to navigating the challenges of losing loved ones and stepping into the unknown, each experience has taught me something valuable. These lessons have not only shaped my approach as a journalist and author but have also ignited my love for crafting, giving me a unique way to express and share my story you see here in this feature section
Early Life & Education
I grew up in a family that loved stories—whether telling them or listening to them—and that’s where my love for storytelling really began. I was lucky to turn that passion into a path, studying journalism at Northwestern University where I first learned the ropes of weaving stories that matter.
Professional Journey
My journalism career has taken me from fast-paced newsrooms to in-depth interviews, covering everything from daily news to deeply personal stories. Each story taught me something new about people and our world. But I’ve always found that it’s the personal stories, the kind you share over coffee or during long walks, that stick with you the longest.
Becoming an Author & Crafting
Back in my college days, I wrote a piece called ‘Echo In The Distance’—a spoken word that really meant a lot to me. It took a while, but in 2023, I finally turned it into a book. It’s filled with illustrations that bring the words to life and I hope it inspires people to think about the impact of their own voices.
When I’m not writing or chasing stories, I’m usually crafting. It’s my go-to for clearing my head and having a bit of fun. Over the years, crafting has also become a way for me to connect with others, sharing our creations and stories. It’s amazing what you can make with just a few simple materials and a splash of imagination.
Building Community
I love meeting new people, exploring new ideas, and learning from others. Whether through my book, at a speaking event, or during one of my crafting workshops, my goal is always the same: to inspire and be inspired.
